Families of two taxi drivers shot by police officers in a case of mistaken identity in Kakamega County are demanding justice.

Mr Caleb Mungai, 33, is said to have been shot and killed by three Administration Police officers at Lasui, while his colleague, Mr Samuel Kamau, was seriously injured during the 1am incident on Tuesday last week.

The two were making a follow-up on a stolen car belonging to one of their colleagues who had been abducted by unknown people.

Ms Teresia Wanjiru said her husband, Mr Mungai, was not a thief.

“Why did the police have to take away the life of our breadwinner?

“I appeal to the Inspector-General of Police to pursue the matter and ensure the officers involved face the full force of the law,” said the 29-year-old.

NO INFORMATION FROM POLICE

The mother of three said no police officer had so far given her any information on the killing of her husband.

Mr Kamau, who is nursing gunshot wounds in his home in Jua Kali Estate, said he received a call from a friend that one of his colleagues had been abducted.

“We then started making a follow-up. The police officers went on shooting, even after we had surrendered and identified ourselves. They killed my friend in cold blood,” he said.

When contacted for comment, regional police boss Moses Ombati said investigations were under way in Shinyalu, Kakamega and Kabsabet police stations, where the officers involved in the shooting are said to be based.

“We apologise to the families and the public,” he said, adding that the shooting resulted from mistaken identity of the victims.
