An angry mob from Siaya County stormed a village in Khwisero, Kakamega County, on Tuesday evening and lynched a man they accused of stealing a motorcycle and set his suspected accomplice ablaze.

They youths lynched Achewa Amimo, 34, and set on fire an unidentified man.

SPARE PARTS

Two houses were also torched by the irate teenagers after they recovered the stolen motorcycle from the home of Mr Alphonce Kabala in Enanga Village, Kisa South Location.

Mr Kabala’s wife Jackline Auma said Mr Amimo had parked the motorcycle in her house on Saturday evening, claiming it had broken down.

“Amimo is my cousin and I have never known him to be a bad boy. He told me he was looking for spare parts to repair the broken-down motorcycle,” said Ms Auma.

She said she wanted to repair the floor in her house on Wednesday morning and was about to call Mr Amimo to remove the motorcycle when she heard noise from outside.

“A group of about 50 boda boda operators had stormed our compound and were hooting loudly and singing war songs. They were accompanied by Amimo,” Ms Auma told journalists who visited the home.

'MERCILESS'

She said some of them mercilessly beat up Mr Amimo, dragged him behind the house and killed him in a banana plantation.

Some of the riders held another man whom they claimed was Mr Amimo’s accomplice. They tied his hands and legs with a manila rope and locked him in the grass-thatched kitchen then set it on fire, said Ms Auma.

“They were so rowdy that they scared away our neighbours. They broke the door and windows from my house and carried them away together with eight sacks of maize, and Sh8,000,” she narrated.

The riders destroyed crops on her farm by cutting down maize and banana stems before they set the main house on fire and took off.

The body of the unidentified man was burnt beyond recognition.

PLANNED

Khwisero OCPD Lanet Sili, who addressed journalists at the scene, said the boda boda operators came with a fixed mind – to kill and torch houses.

“They acted so fast that by the time we reached the home, they had lynched one man, burnt another and set two houses ablaze,” he said.

Mr Sili condemned the act and warned wananchi against taking the law into their own hands.

He said had the riders collaborated with the police, more people connected with motorcycle theft would have been arrested.

The bodies of the deceased were taken to Mbale Hospital mortuary in Vihiga County as police launched investigations into the killings and arson.
