The Teachers Service Commission has formed a committee to investigate alleged brutality by teachers against students at Keveye Girls Secondary School after a video emerged of teachers canning learners without mercy.

The video said to have been recorded by one of the teachers at Keveye Girls, one of the best performing schools in Western Kenya, was posted on Facebook on Tuesday evening and went viral.

“I have seen the video. It is very recent. My committee will visit the school and launch investigations into the matter,” said TSC county director Stephen Mudho.

“The committee will authenticate whether the video is real or choreographed before taking any action,” he added.
He noted there were wrangles between the teachers and the administration.
The six -minute video shows four teachers, three men and a lady, standing in a line and heavily caning the students.

After the four teachers are done with the students in the room, the learners are then passed over to another teacher waiting at the door for more caning.

It shows the students groaning in pain and falling on the ground while crying. One of them is seen knocking her head on the ground while escaping from painful whipping.

The video- whose authenticity was yet to be ascertained-was recorded last year just before the schools closed for December holidays but surfaced this week.

The principal, Mrs Judith Ngome, said on Wednesday that she read malice in the timing of the release of a video recorded in November last year blaming bad blood between some teachers.

“Some of my teachers have turned down my efforts to reconcile them after quarrelling before students and this could be the reason for the emergence of the video,” said Mrs Ngome.
She assured parents that their daughters were “in safe hands”.

The TSC boss said disciplinary action will be taken against responsible teachers after the report of the committee.

The Nation has established that the girls are caned over poor academic performance.
