A woman risks a Sh2 million fine for allegedly causing panic inside an aeroplane at Kisumu International Airport on Saturday.

Ms Millicent Akinyi Adongo on Monday appeared before a Kisumu court accused of causing a one-hour delay for 27 other passengers by smoking an electronic cigarette.

She was also accused of interfering with the safety of the aircraft, KQ5Y-KYM number 874, and those aboard during the 8am incident.

According to the charge sheet, Ms Adongo refused to follow instructions by flight authorities to stop smoking.

She denied the charge and told Chief Magistrate Lucy Gitari she did not know if smoking an electronic cigarette was prohibited.

She was released on a Sh50,000 bond with a surety of a similar amount or a Sh20,000 cash bail.

Ms Akinyi was arrested by airport police after she defied orders by aircraft officials, including captain Vaghajian Baresh, to comply with flight rules and regulations.

She reportedly turned violent when asked to switch off the cigarette, which was also said to be interfering with the plane's electronic gadgets.

The law spells out a fine not exceeding Sh2 million for her action.

The International Air Transport Association also prohibits smoking while on board, either by members of the crew or by passengers.
