Kisumu woman rep candidate claims life is in danger

Kisumu woman representative candidate Grace Akumu has claimed her life is in danger.

Mrs Akumu, who is contesting on a Citizens Conventions Party (CCP) ticket, claimed she is being trailed by unidentified people.

She alleged her rivals were behind the threat.

The CCP party leader is battling it out with Orange Democratic Movement (ODM)’s Rozah Buyu and Beatrice Anyango Okalo of Jubilee to replace Rose Nyamunga as the second woman representative for Kisumu County.

“It is disappointing and sad that it is a woman doing this. One has hired the assassins and is being helped by another who is housing them here in Kisumu,” said Mrs Akumu.

She was addressing journalists outside the Kisumu Central Police Station after recording a statement.

Mrs Akumu said she has shared with police the registration number of the vehicle the alleged criminals are using.

The candidate said she had been given additional security.

Mrs Akumu is the widow of the late former trade unionist Dennis Akumu.

She claimed that her rivals are worried about her popularity and fear losing to her in the August 8 elections.

“I have the constitutional right to contest for this seat and another person cannot claim that she must win by hook or crook.

"Leadership comes from God and my rivals should know that [voters will judge them] based on their past records and their ability to convince the electorate,” she said.

The police are investigating the assassination claims.
