Lupita weeps over insecurity in Kenya

Oscar Award winner Lupita Amondi Nyong'o was on Wednesday moved to tears by a poem on insecurity in Kenya.

The choral verse in Dholuo by pupils from Mariwa Primary School highlighted the high number of Kenyans who have lost their lives to terrorist attacks.

The choral verse named Magenga narrated how a young man who promised to build her mother a house was killed by terrorist.

“You had the ambition of being a doctor.
Why did you die before putting on the graduation gown?
Why did they kill you before you build me a nice house that you promised?
Why the insecurity in the country,” the children sung.

Ms Nyongo together with her mother Mrs Dorothy Nyong'o wept in public.

Kenya has been in the global spotlight over the rising insecurity.

The latest being the Garrisa University attack where 146 people were killed.

Dressed elegantly in a green Kitenge, pink blazer and green flat shoes, the actress who won an Oscar for her role in the movie 12 Years A slave last year was visiting her Seme home in Kisumu County for a session to mentor young girls.

ENCOURAGEMENT

She encouraged the girls to struggle with their identity so that they achieve what they want to be in life.

“Differences make us the same than nothing else, do not loose sense of who you are while struggling to retain your identity,” she said

She also encouraged the students never to lose sight of education. “Education should embrace the arts to help us express ourselves better,” she said.

“It doesn’t matter where you come from but where you going. Work towards making a change to the world and you would be known,” she said.

The more than 150 girls had a first-hand encounter with Lupita as she narrated her journey to being a Hollywood star.

She challenged the girls to follow their dreams and not allow their current circumstances define them.

“You may be facing numerous challenges at home your parents may be poor you could be living with unsupportive relatives. Do not let this define you or your future. You were created to achieve more and to be the best the world can have,” she told the girls.

NO WRITTEN FORMULA FOR SUCCESS

“There was no written formula to get where I am right now, love where you are when you are there,” she added.

Comedian Eric Omondi who was present at the event asked Kenyan musicians to up their game.

“Kenyan Music does not transcend. Tanzania and Nigerians have taken over Kenya,” he said.

The Global elephant ambassador said she was happy to be back home.

The event which was held at Ratta Girls hostel was dedicated to her grandmother Dorcas Nyongo, who she said valued the education of girls.

Lupita’s father, Kisumu senator Anyang’ Nyong’o, asked governor Jack Ranguma to start a film production school in the lake region and name it Lolihood meaning Lake Victoria - Nam Lolwe.

“Going by our pillars of nurturing talents in the county, we should start our own Lolihood film production,” he said

Mr Jack Ranguma said talented people were pillars of economic development.

“We are going to develop talents to ensure that it becomes the driving force of economic development of our people,” he said.
