County security chiefs have been told to perform or they will be sacked.

Cabinet Secretary Joseph ole Lenku on Tuesday said the ministry was mandated a five-year transition period to ensure its functions and operations were in line with the Constitution.

The warning comes as the Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Government realigns itself to comply with the law on Provincial Administration.

The security docket is still under the national government with titles and responsibilities of the old Provincial Administration changed to harmonise them with devolved units.

Speaking during a security meeting in Kisumu, Mr Lenku said that among responsibilities under watch by the national government will be the registration of persons in line with the Nyumba Kumi initiative.

He said this was in line with the on-going ‘Usalama Watch’ that seeks to weed out illegal immigrants who have been blamed for increased cases of terrorism in the country.

“We must embrace the new constitutional order. The threats we are faced with currently are more sophisticated than before,” said Mr Lenku.

He instructed security officers to conduct at least four  meetings in a month within their areas of jurisdiction and file reports to the central government.

This includes threats of terrorism and petty crimes in the villages.

Mr Lenku warned security officers against colluding with illegal immigrants.
