Two died on Thursday at a Kisumu hospital after they were involved in a road accident where a truck ferrying sugarcane veered off and fell from a flyover on the Kisumu-Nairobi Road.

The two — the driver and a loader — sustained injuries and were rushed to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga referral hospital for treatment where they later died.

The truck crashed walls acting as barriers before it fell after its driver lost control as he tried to negotiate a corner on the fly over.

Sugar cane and metals were scattered all over the accident scene.

According to the Nyanza Regional Traffic Enforcement Officer (RTEO) Simon Kipkemboi the driver and the loader suffered serious head and limb injuries.

There were fears that school children could have been trapped below the truck but police dismissed the claims and after the wreckage had been removed, no body was found.

“Fortunately enough the pedestrian who was walking on the road where the truck fell was only hit by the sugarcane that fell and is in stable condition,” said Mr Kipkemboi.

The traffic boss said it was fortunate that the accident happened when there was little human traffic along the road which is few meters from Kasagam Mixed Secondary School.

The three were rushed to the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital.

“The flyovers and by-passes are new to Kisumu and there is need for drivers to take all the necessary caution while driving on these roads,” he said.

He also cautioned pedestrians or idlers sitting on the flyovers to desist from the act as it puts their lives in danger in an event that a driver loses control of their vehicle.
