Kitui County officer charged with graft and abuse of office

A senior officer in Kitui County was Tuesday arraigned in court to face corruption and abuse of office charges.

Dr Naomi Mawia Mang’atu, a member of the County Public Service Board was charged with doing business with the county government where she undertook Sh2 million fuel and lubricants supply contract.

She was arrested by Anti-Corruption officers and brought before Kitui Principal Magistrate Johnston Munguti

The charges stated that between July 18 and November 6, 2014, Ms Mang’atu made the supplies through tender number CGOK-Kitui/T/03/2014-2015 awarded to Mapana Enterprises Limited, a company believed to be hers.

This, the prosecution said amounted to abusing her office and conflict of interest contrary to Section 42 sub section 3 as read with section 48 of the Ethics and Economic Crimes Act.

The accused denied the charges and was released on a bond of Sh500,000 plus a surety of similar amount.

The case will be mentioned on September 26 while the hearing is set for January 15, 2018.
