Follow Nasa, boycott repeat election, Charity Ngilu tells the Kamba

Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu has urged Kenyans to boycott the repeat presidential election scheduled for next week.

Mrs Ngilu also told the Kamba community to heed the call by National Super Alliance (Nasa) to keep away from the repeat poll and instead focus on agitation for electoral reforms.

“Our candidates Raila Odinga and Kalonzo Musyoka, who were the contenders withdrew from the repeat presidential race, we therefore have no business in that election because we do not have a candidate,” said the governor.

She said the October 26 poll is already flawed and participating in it would legitimise President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto’s quest for a second term in office.

The former Cabinet secretary, who fell out with Jubilee leaders in 2015 and was later hounded out of Cabinet, said Mr Kenyatta and Mr Ruto do not deserve another five years in office because they had mismanaged the country’s economy and curtailed Kenyans’ basic constitutional freedoms.

“Kenyans are suffering the effects of a failing economy yet we are seeing Jubilee top leaders extravagantly spending state resources daily on their campaigns to retain power,” Mrs Ngilu said.

The governor said corruption, police brutality and the economic slump had reached alarming levels only witnessed during the Kanu rule.

She accused Jubilee of reneging on many of its pledges to Kenyans.

Mrs Ngilu spoke on Monday at a funeral in Kabati, Kitui East, five kilometres from Zombe town where Mr Kenyatta hosted a state lunch for local leaders and later addressed a Jubilee campaign rally.

Mrs Ngilu warned Jubilee leaders that they cannot win a fair and credible election because Kenyans were fed up with their dictatorial tendencies and their disregard for the Constitution, which guarantees basic freedoms.

Last weekend, Kitui South MP Rachael Nyamai of Jubilee told Mrs Ngilu to stop discrediting President Kenyatta’s government in her efforts to campaign for the Opposition.

Ms Nyamai defended the Jubilee administration against claims of being biased against Ukambani.

She said Mr Kenyatta had developed all regions in the country equitably regardless of their political affiliation.

“We have witnessed many development projects initiated by Jubilee in the three counties of Machakos, Kitui and Makueni unlike the previous regimes, so any claim that the region is getting a raw deal are untrue,” said Ms Nyamai.

The MP was drumming support for Mr Kenyatta at Ikutha Market in her constituency where she urged residents to re-elect him so he can finish projects he has initiated.

“Madam Ngilu nurtured me politically and she is the one who took me to Jubilee in 2013. I don’t know why she broke ranks with my bosses and I cannot be party to whatever disagreement she has with them,” said Ms Nyamai.

She was accompanied by former Kiambu Woman Representative Priscilla Nyokabi.

Ms Nyamai urged residents to shun the opposition’s call to boycott the repeat presidential election as it is meant to cause confusion and chaos in the country with a view of ascending to power through the back door.
