Police probe threat to raid Kitui village again

Police in Kitui County are investigating threats of fresh attacks by the fugitive leader of the gang that killed 12 people last week.

The dreaded gang leader is said to have called from his hideout, taunting the residents of Nyanyaa village and threatening to raid the area again and unleash more terror.

Kitui County police boss Cheruto Githinji said detectives were monitoring the mobile phone subscriber and had already traced the number used to threaten the residents at the weekend to Huruma estate in Nairobi.

Ms Githinji said residents told investigators that the mobile phone number belonged to Kilonzo Musyoka, alias Karung’u, the ex-convict who was behind the senseless violence.

“We are not certain whether that jailbird is behind the alleged threats but we are liaising with Nairobi detectives and Safaricom to get to the bottom of the matter,” the police boss said on Sunday.

A resident who requested anonymity for fear of being targeted by the gang told the Nation that the gang leader called several villagers, mocking them over their relentless manhunt and vowed to avenge the killing of his mother and wife.

“It’s true that he called people known to him, taunting the police and youths who have been combing the nearby Endui Hills in search of him.

“He promised to strike the village again with horrible consequences” she said.

The villager said the threats had caused more fear among the residents, who are still struggling to come to terms with the night raid that left innocent children orphaned and wives widowed.
