Mvurya releases Sh103m school fees bursary for 1,920 students

Over 1,900 bright and needy students in Kwale on Wednesday received Sh103 million school fees bursary for continuing their studies next year.

Another Sh50 million was also set aside to support needy students who will be admitted to national schools in January.

Governor Salim Mvurya presided over the issuance of the school fees cheques during a colourful ceremony at the Ukunda showground.

Among the highest beneficiaries were 481 students of Kwale High school (Sh27,776,282), 270 students of Matuga Girls High School(Sh14,597,380) and 184 students of Shimo La Tewa School (Sh11,995,312).

In total, 1,920 students from 118 national schools countrywide received fees for the whole year.

The principals of the schools received the cheques which were distributed to them by Governor Mvurya on behalf of the students.

"We campaigned in the year 2013 and promised to pay school fees for students joining Form One. We did this because we want these students to come back and develop the county," said Governor Mvurya.

He added: "I know results for 2016 KCPE students were released and some parents are worried about school fees…worry not as we have Sh50 million to cater for them."

He assured parents that the programme will not be disrupted or interfered by politics.

"This bursary programme has been in my manifesto and it is what devolution is all about," added Mr Mvurya.

He said that 68 students whom the county sponsored for higher education in India will be returning to give their services to the county next year.

During the function, 153 artisans trained in various fields at the county polytechnics were also awarded certificates.

He advised the students to work hard in school stressing that they look forward to celebrating results of the first beneficiaries of the programme who will be sitting their KCSE exams next year.

The Governor also advised parents to monitor their children’s performance in school as well as take charge of their discipline to enable them to perform well in school.

Kwale deputy governor Fatuma Achani said besides the bursary, Mr Mvurya has been instrumental in the development of 164 Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) centres and hiring of 500 teachers.

Kwale county executive for education Mangale Chiforomodo assured parents that all the funds released are safe from any form of misappropriation adding that they are usually audited.

Kwale High School principal Festus Sombo appealed to students to work hard and excel in exams to appreciate the county government’s efforts.

The programme dubbed 'Elimu ni sasa' by the county was launched in the year 2013.
