What you need to know:

  • Preparations for the ceremony to be held at the Nanyuki Stadium in Laikipia County have started in earnest.
  • The county also has the highest number of wildlife living outside protected areas making human-wildlife conflict an emotive issue.
  • Residents hope major roads like Nanyuki-Pesi-Gwa Kung’u and Nanyuki-Doldol will be tarmacked to open up the region.
  • About 1,200 families allocated plots by the country’s first president Mzee Jomo Kenyatta 44 years ago hope to get title deeds.

President Uhuru Kenyatta is expected to grace the homecoming ceremony for recently appointed Devolution Cabinet Secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri on Saturday.

Preparations for the ceremony to be held at the Nanyuki Stadium in Laikipia County have started in earnest with local leaders preparing a long wish-list for the county to be presented to Mr Kenyatta.

“Elevation of our two hospitals from Level Four to Level Five will be one of the key agenda during the thanks-giving service for the CS,” the county secretary Mr Mwaniki said.

Laikipia County government spends about Sh60 million every month on Nyahururu and Nanyuki county hospitals and elevating them to Level Five status would attract at least 50 per cent funding from the national government.

Mr Mwaniki, who is co-chairing the organising committee together with County Commissioner Apollo Okelo, said about 10,000 people from the Aberdare axis were expected at the event.

TITLE DEEDS

About 1,200 families allocated plots by the country’s first president Mzee Jomo Kenyatta 44 years ago are hoping that his son, who is now the President, will complete the ownership process by handing them title deeds.

“The families have waited for the documents since 1973 when they were given the plots by Mzee Jomo Kenyatta and it would be good if his son would talk about the title deeds to appease our souls,” Nanyuki County Assembly Deputy Speaker Peter Kimondo told Nation.co.ke.

Residents of the county, which is among the most marginalised in Mt Kenya region in terms of infrastructure development, will be keen to hear the President speak about tarmacking the 78-kilometre road linking Nanyuki to Rumuruti, which is the proposed county headquarters.

The county has less than a 100 kilometres of tarmac roads and the residents hope other major roads like Nanyuki-Pesi-Gwa kung’u and Nanyuki-Doldol will be tarmacked to open up the region.

Being a semi-arid region and in dire need of water for domestic and irrigation, the proposed Kahurura dam, Mr Kimondo said, would provide adequate water to a large part of the county.

The county also has the highest number of wildlife living outside protected areas making human-wildlife conflict an emotive issue.
