Deputy President (DP) William Ruto on Tuesday offered his helicopter to be used to airlift three people shot and injured in a confrontation with armed herders in Laikipia.

The DP had just landed at Rumuruti State Lodge to chair a top-level security meeting when he decided that the aircraft be used to ferry the three patients to Nairobi for specialised treatment.

Bandits had shot and injured the three – 25-year-old Rose Kuraru, who is a mother with a seven-month-old pregnancy, and her five- and eight-year-old sons – on Monday evening at their home in Arjijo in Laikipia North.

According to Mukogodo East Member of County Assembly Paul Shuel, the family was asleep when the bandits stormed their home.

The woman sustained serious injuries of the leg and shoulder while the boys sustained chest and leg injuries.

Their father is said to have narrowly escaped the attack.

The three were airlifted from Nanyuki Cottage Hospital to Nairobi.

The helicopter later returned to pick the Deputy President, who flew to another insecurity-hit region: Baringo.

The herders have wreaked havoc in the area for the past few months as they invade ranches, conservancies and private land.
