CJ Maraga to officially open Mpeketoni Law Courts as he tours Lamu

  • On Tuesday, the CJ will officially open the new Garsen High Court in Tana River.
  • During the ceremony, Justice Maraga will install a new judge at the court.
  • The law requires the Judiciary to establish a High Court in each of the 47 counties.

Chief Justice David Maraga is Monday set to inspect the Lamu Law Courts as he tours the coastal county.

Justice Maraga is also expected to meet Governor Issa Timamy to discuss court expansion plans.

The CJ will officially inaugurate the Mpeketoni Law Courts, which became fully fledged courts in June 2016.

Previously, there was a mobile court covering vast areas of mainland Lamu, including Hindi, Witu and Mpeketoni and its environs.

On Tuesday, the CJ will officially open the new Garsen High Court in Tana River County that was built for Sh100 million.

During the ceremony, Justice Maraga will install a new judge at the court.

39 HIGH COURT STATIONS

The Garsen High Court will bring to 39 the number of High Court stations in Kenya.

Only eight counties are without a High Court.

The law requires the Judiciary to establish a High Court in each of the 47 counties.

In January, Justice Maraga opened two High Court stations in Narok and Kabarnet.

He also opened a refurbished children’s court in Nakuru.

On Wednesday, the CJ will address a forum of heads of court stations from across the country in Mombasa.

The forum will discuss the new transformation agenda for the Judiciary.
