Sh866m used on water, health and road projects

What you need to know:

  • A total of Sh228 million was spent on roads in the financial year. The Nyambura-Njuguini road in Athi-River Ward received Sh6.8 million while Sh5 million was set aside for each of 31 other roads.
  • In the same period, the county government built the Kithimani-Mwala Junction road in three months at a cost of Sh650 million, but this is not included in the report.
  • The allocation included the desilting of Yatta Canal in Matuu Ward at a cost of Sh10 million. The desilting of the canal in Ndalani Ward cost Sh5 million.

Some Sh866 million of development funds allocated to the county in the 2013/14 financial year was spent on three sectors.

The sectors are water, health and roads, according to a report prepared by the county executive for public scrutiny.

The Machakos County Project Implementation Status Report indicates that the bulk of the funds went to health (Sh473 million) for the upgrading of 32 community hospitals and health centres.

The renovation of  Machakos Level Five Hospital’s  intensive care unit, departments, roofing, toilets and offices was allocated Sh141 million.

The construction of Kamulu Drumvale Hospital in Muthwani Ward received Sh13.9 million while the Makutano Community Hospital in Mwala and Kusyomuomo Community Hospital were allocated Sh12.9 million each.

ROADS

Water projects had a budget of Sh164 million. They included irrigation system in Kibauni Ward (Sh15.5 million), Kondo irrigation project in Kithimani Ward (Sh9.7 million) and construction of Mlolongo, Syokimau trunk sewer lines (Sh9.5 million).

The allocation included the desilting of Yatta Canal in Matuu Ward at a cost of Sh10 million. The desilting of the canal in Ndalani Ward cost Sh5 million.

Water, Irrigation and Sanitation executive Francis Maliti said the canal rehabilitation was undertaken by the National Government.
