Traders in Moyale town have decried recurrent power blackouts that have left them counting losses in the past one month.

According to Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI) and Moyale export director Ali Nur Mumin, small businesses are the most affected by the power surge in the electricity supplied from Ethiopia.

Mr Mumin appealed to the government to supply the town with generators in order to save residents from further suffering.

“Traders are incurring huge losses for the past one month. Water supply has also been affected. We will not have the Moyale as the Dubai of Kenya as envisioned if the power outage problem is not dealt with once and for all,’’ he said.

He said majority of residents are also cut off from communication after mobile phones run out of power with M-pesa and other mobile money transfer outlets in the town recording reduced business.

He said institutions like hospitals, banks and hotels have resorted to generators which are costly to sustain.

Moyale deputy County commissioner John Cheruiyot downplayed the concerns asking locals to bear with the situation.

Marsabit County is not connected to national grid with Moyale town connected to Ethiopia grid.
