Two motorcyclists are fighting for their lives at Albilal hospital after they were shot during a chaotic demonstration against police harassment in Moyale town.

Speaking to the Nation on Wednesday, the motorcycle association chair, Ali Guyo, said that majority of the operators have no driving licenses even though it is a requirement.

He said that one was shot in the hip while the other was shot on the leg.

According to him, police officers are fond of asking for money from them so as to release their motorcycles even after they are freed by the courts.

“A policeman arrests you, takes you to court and you pay a fine of up to Sh20,000. However, the police still demands money to release your motorbike,” said Mr Guyo.

Mr Guyo said there is no driving school in the town explaining that many learn how to ride motorcycles through apprenticeship and get to work after gaining skills and confidence.

“Those who have licenses are mostly those who came from Marsabit town or other regions. We are however making efforts to have those in our association get the documents,” he added.

Efforts to reach the authorities for comment were futile.
