Three suspected carjackers lynched in Meru

Three suspected carjackers were Monday evening lynched by a mob in Meru County.

One of the suspects who was among the four who had tried to hijack a Nissan matatu however managed to escape.

Police recovered a gun, a number of mobile phone simcards and other items from the suspects who were lynched at Kariene Market, along the Meru-Embu highway.

Eyewitnesses said the suspects wanted to hijack a matatu but the driver refused to stop.

"It is believed they wanted to use the matatu to go and rob a macadamia trader. The driver of the matatu however sped off," an eyewitness said.

The suspects also attempted to hijack a motorcycle but its engine stalled.

It was then that passers-by sensed the suspects could be having ulterior motives and chased them as they tried to disappear into a banana plantation.

Three of the suspects were cornered and stoned to death while one, who was also armed, managed to escape.

Monday's are usually pay day for macadamia farmers and the suspects are said to have wanted to attack a dealer who had just been paid.
