Four people are feared dead after a quarry caved in at Kabauni in South Imenti, Meru County.

Area police boss John Cheruiyot told Nation.co.ke on phone that five people were excavating stones during the Thursday, 4pm incident.

He said strong winds could have uprooted trees at the top of the quarry, which led to the boulders falling and trapping the miners inside.

“One of the workers has been rescued and he has been rushed to the Nkubu Consolata Mission Hospital for treatment. We fear four others could be trapped beneath the boulders and we are trying our best to rescue them,” he said.

The police boss, however, said the rescue mission was difficult as there were no machinery to lift the soil.

“Good Samaritans are currently using hands to excavate the soil. We have, however, asked for help from local engineers with equipment,” he said.
