The Meru County government has aside more than Sh100 million for repair of roads destroyed by El Niño rains last year.

Governor Peter Munya on Friday said locals will be employed to do the repairs. According to Mr Munya, the county’s 45 wards will get at least Sh2 million each for the project.

“For us to get the machinery to do this work, we need to advertise contracts and do some inspections, which is time consuming and costly. We have decided to use manual labour to cut on all this bureaucracies so that development can continue,” said governor.

He spoke at Mulathankari Multipurpose Development Training Institute during a public to forum on devolution.

“The law allows the use of alternative means to achieve development as a way of speeding up the process and also cutting down the extra cost of advertising, applying for the tenders to even vetting process before contractors can start the work,” added governor Munya.

Meru County Executive Member of Roads Newton Itobi asked those near road reserves to move to allow for expansion.
