Meru Governor Peter Munya has told Senator Kiraitu Murungi to quit politics because he is old.

He said Mr Murungi, who has announced his interest to unseat him as Meru governor in 2017 elections, should now retire.

“There was no need for Mr Murungi who served as MP for many years before he was elected Senator to switch to the gubernatorial seat,” said the Council of Governors chairman.

Mr Munya, who spoke in Mikinduri, however, said he was confident of trouncing Mr Murungi should he vie against him.

Mr Munya and Mr Murungi, who at one point were close allies, are now bitter rivals as they both eye the county’s chief executive seat in the 2017 polls.

Mr Murungi is vouching for the proposed Jubilee party while Mr Munya has insisted he will form his own party after Mr Murungi announced the dissolution of the Alliance Party of Kenya.

ENJOYS SUPPORT

The governor said he enjoys support in all the ten sub-counties due to his development record.

“Everywhere I have gone locals have indicated they will vote for me again in 2017,” he said.

Mr Munya urged residents to vote for him as those who will seek positions of MP and MCA on tickets of his yet to be announced party.

He, however, said he will back President Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto’s re-election.

Meanwhile, the governor reiterated his intention to vie for presidency during the 2022 general elections.

Mr Munya, who was accompanied by a several MCAs and county executives, named investments in roads, water, health and markets as some of his achievements.

He at the same time took issue with Tigania East MP Mpuri Aburi for allegedly inciting Mikinduri traders not to pay levies to the county government.

Some residents protested when Mr Munya arrived demanding the re-opening of the market.

The governor asked the traders to pay the rates and also ordered the dissolution of the market committee.
