Kenya Methodist University (KeMU) has appointed Prof Henry Kiriamiti as the new vice-chancellor, replacing Prof Alfred Mutema.

Even though Prof Mutema’s term was terminated under unclear circumstances, the Chancellor, the Rev Joseph Ntombura, said he had completed his term.

The Rev Ntombura, who spoke when he introduced the new VC Wednesday, said Prof Kiriamiti was picked after rigorous interviews.

“I challenge the new VC to steer the university to new heights by helping produce graduates of the highest calibre,” the chancellor said.

He also would not comment on claims that the university is in a financial crisis.

Reports say employee’s allowances have been cut by 30 per cent.

Prof Kiriamiti was the deputy principal (finance, administration and planning) at Garissa University College, which was closed down after a terrorist attack on April 2, 2015.

The Rev Ntombura also wants the Basic Education Act, 2013 reviewed to give churches full control of their schools.

The Act creates boards to manage the schools.

However, churches feel they have not been given proper recognition in the running of their schools.
