A member of the Meru County Assembly was on Monday charged with fraudulently obtaining Sh1.4 million from a road contractor.

Mikinduri Ward MCA Gabriel Chokera denied the charge when he appeared before Meru Chief Magistrate Lucy Ambasi.

He was charged that on diverse dates between September 16 and October 8 last year in Imenti North Sub-County, he obtained Sh1.4 million from Joseph Kobia by pretending that he was in a position to get him a bulldozer for hire.

The politician was freed on a Sh5 million bond with a surety of a similar amount, with an alternative cash bail of Sh2 million.

The MCA was arrested on Friday by detectives from Imenti North Directorate of Criminal Investigation office and booked at the Meru Police Station. He was later released on Sh70,000 police bond.
