Meru businessman charged with threatening to shoot employee

A prominent Meru businessman was arraigned Thursday for threatening to kill an employee.

Mr Lawrence Kinyua Njeru, a license firearm holder, was charged with threatening to kill Mr Anthony Gituma using a Ceska pistol on November 2, 2016.

He faced a second charge of assaulting Mr Gituma during the confrontation.

On the third count, Mr Njeru was accused of threatening to kill his younger brother, Mr Anthony Murithi Njeru on Wednesday, using the same pistol in Makutano Township.

He denied the charges before Meru Principal Magistrate Monica Maroro.

Through his lawyer Gregory Mutuma, the accused pleaded with the court to release him on a lenient cash bail.

Mr Mutuma, told the court that the High Court had earlier granted an anticipatory bail barring police from arresting the businessman.

Mr Njeru was released on Sh100,000 bond with a surety of similar amount or Sh100,000 cash bail.

The case will be mentioned on February 24 and heard on May 25.

Meanwhile, Imenti North DCIO Collins Wekesa has said that two months ago, his office had written a letter to the businessman asking him to surrender his firearm after he was accused of misusing it.

Me Wekesa added that they asked Mr Njeru to produce his Ceska pistol after getting approval from the National Firearms Licencing Bureau, but did not comply.

He was disarmed Thursday when he appeared in court.
