What you need to know:

  • Nominated MCA Alhaji Mwendia claimed the curtains were procured for the Meru Teaching and Referral Hospital only.
  • A procurement officer who sought anonymity confirmed the curtains had been purchased and delivered to the hospital.
  • County Health executive William Muraah, however, said the “special curtains” were distributed to all health facilities in the county.

Meru residents have raised the red flag over reports that the county government purchased curtains worth Sh7.8 million.

The plastic curtains described as “special” were bought in the 2014/2015 financial year.

According to nominated MCA Alhaji Mwendia, the curtains were procured for the Meru Teaching and Referral Hospital only.

Mr Mwendia told Nation.co.ke by phone that the county assembly had raised concerns about the misappropriation of taxpayers’ money on projects that are not a priority.

A procurement officer who sought anonymity confirmed the curtains had been purchased and delivered to the hospital.

“The curtains procured were worth Sh7.8 million and were only delivered to MTRH and not any other hospital,” said the officer.

County Health executive William Muraah, however, said the “special curtains” were distributed to all health facilities in the county.

Dr Muraah, who spoke to Nation.co.ke by phone, said he would be issuing a press statement to clarify the matter later Tuesday.

“The curtains are special compared to the normal ones. I want to clarify that they were also issued to the newly opened medical facilities for the windows and partitioning of private sections for patients,” Dr Muraa said.
