Terror scare leaflets in Meru not by Shabaab, says Igembe South administrator

Leaflets dropped in some parts of Meru County warning of possible terror attacks could not have been authored by Al-Shabaab.

While warning of dire consequences on those who will be found to be behind the leaflets, Igembe South Deputy County Commissioner Apollo Okello said it was not possible that Al-Shabaab members could write letters to people if they were planning to attack.

“Papers were dropped all over Kinyanka and recently in Auki Primary School.

“Others were photocopied and taken to Maua. I can’t really understand the reason behind this.

“We have conducted our investigations and it is pretty clear that this was not done by Al-Shabaab,” he said.

He said this was causing fear among residents and could negatively affect the county’s economy.

Igembe region Criminal Investigations Officer John Kemboi said they will act harshly on those found joking with matters of people’s security.

He called on parents to monitor their children’s progress as some were joining militant groups without their knowledge.

“Let us know the young people who went away sometimes back so that we can have good records. At the same time give us information concerning those who went away long time ago and are now coming back to the society,” he said.

He told them to be careful about strangers who were renting expensive premises for long as some might be having bad motives.
