A prison warder at Meru GK Prison has died after allegedly taking poison.

Mr Edward Mwenda was found unconscious in a farm by colleagues Saturday morning and rushed to the Meru Level Five Hospital where he died while undergoing treatment.

The officer who is in his early 40s is said to have threatened to take his life earlier this month citing family problems but was restrained.

His colleagues described him as a sociable man but who had recently become reclusive, preferring to spend most of his off duty time alone.

“He was very excited after his first born was admitted to join high school but started being withdrawn,” one of his colleagues said.

But speaking on phone, Meru GK prison boss David Ndumu said Mr Mwenda succumbed following “an illness.”
