Building at St Agnes Girls school burnt down

A building at St Agnes Girls Secondary school in Imenti South, Meru County, was on Sunday night burnt down.

The timber building, which had four rooms used as a general store, home science class, home science store and mosque, was razed to ashes.

The incident that started around 9pm when the students were in class was reported by the principal Harriet Nduara, who noticed smoke emanating from the building.

Property worth millions of shillings was destroyed, with nothing salvaged during the fire incident.

Police officers, with the help of Meru County fire fighters managed to put out the fire.

Meru County Police Commander Samson Kinne said mattresses, lockers and washing basins which were in the building were burnt.

“The incident was reported at Igoji Police Station. The police rushed to the scene but they were unable to salvage anything. We have launched investigations to determine the cause of the fire,” said the police boss.

He added that no injuries were reported during the incident.

Other schools that have experienced fires recently include Mikinduri Girls Secondary, Ruiga Girls Secondary, St Pius X Seminary in Nkubu, St Angelic Girls Secondary, Abuthuguchi Boys Secondary School and Gikumene Girls Secondary School.

Thirteen students have so far appeared in various Meru courts for arson and attempted arson in the last two weeks while a number of schools have been forced to send students home.
