Two people who were injured following a road accident along the Meru-Embu highway on Tuesday have been referred to Kenyatta National Hospital for specialised treatment.

This came as Tharaka-Nithi Police Commander Johnston Ipara warned drivers against speeding.

One person died while 10 others were injured following the accident at the Nithi bridge, an accident black spot that has claimed many lives in the past.

Eight of those injured were Wednesday still at Chuka General Hospital, while a mother and her son were referred to Kenyatta National Hospital in Nairobi.

According to the driver, Paul Gituma, the vehicle’s brakes failed before he lost control while negotiating a corner on the steep Nithi slope.

Mr Ipara now wants police to be on alert, and to arrest and prosecute any driver speeding above the legal limit.

“Police need to be more vigilant and arrest and prosecute any drivers breaking the traffic rules,” said Mr Ipara.

REPORT SPEEDING DRIVERS

He also asked the public to report any driver behaving irresponsibly while driving.

“Let the public take no chance with rogue drivers who behave irresponsibly.

"Report them to the nearest police station and we will take appropriate action,” Mr Ipara said.

He noted that the roads are very slippery during the wet season and urged drivers to be more careful.

“During the wet season roads are very slippery and drivers should drive slowly and attentively to minimize accidents especially as we approach the December festive season,” added Mr Ipara.

He also urged drivers of vehicles transporting miraa not to speed, especially while in busy areas like towns.

“I have seen vehicles transporting miraa pass the busy Chuka Town at very high speeds and I urge them to slow down to avoid accidents,” he said.
