Police in Meru impounded 400 litres of illicit liquor that was found hidden near a church.

Municipality Chief Mercy Muriithi said that during a raid on Monday, 20 containers of chang’aa were found buried next to the fence of the Kambakia Methodist Church in Meru Town.

Following a tip-off from a drunken man, police raided a homestead and arrested two suspects. Officers also found distilling equipment.

“We arrested a woman who was found distilling chang’aa. A man, who is suspected to be part of the illegal trade, was also seized,” said Ms Muriithi.

The administrator accused residents and church leaders of failing to report the matter.

“I urge church members to work with us and report such cases, because it is an embarrassment to have a chang’aa den next to a place of worship,” said the chief.

Kiorone Administration Police post boss Sergeant Charles Gitonga said the two suspects would be remanded in police custody and taken to court.

In July, the war on illicit liquor received a boost after President Uhuru Kenyatta ordered a crackdown in central Kenya to wipe out killer drinks.
