The Kenya Red Cross Society and Meru Woman Representative Florence Kajuju have donated shoes worth Sh3.4 million to over 17,000 learners in the county in an initiative aimed at promoting hygiene.

Among the beneficiaries are 3,600 pupils in Tigania East, 4,080 in Tigania West, 3,500 in Igembe Central, 3,500 in Igembe North and 2,275 in Igembe South.

Ms Kajuju said her office would find a way of helping schools in the dry zones across the county to be gazetted as hardship areas to motivate teachers.

“Education standards in Tigania West are still low and we need to motivate teachers.

"Land resources have diminished and education is the only guarantee to secure our future”, she said.

She also called on the newly-elected leaders of Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) and Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) to convene a meeting with the Teachers Service Commission to resolve the stalemate over the signing of performance contracts for teachers.

Meru assistant director of education Lucy Mbae said the donations would help boost learning.

“Children face challenges like poor parental care and poverty in most families which may lead to lack of concentration in class.

"Teachers need to educate the community on the availability of the bursaries from the Ministry of Education, Constituency Development Fund and county scholarships to help parents educate their children," said Ms Mbae.
