Driver burns to death after truck rolls, catches fire in Meru accident

A driver died Thursday after a fuel truck he was driving rolled at the Meru-Nanyuki-Isiolo junction before catching fire.
The truck's brakes appeared to have failed before the driver lost control of the vehicle during the 9am incident at the Subuiga black spot in Buuri Sub-County.
A witness, Ms Assenath Gatwiri, told the Nation that the rear wheels of the lorry caught fire before it rolled over and landed in a ditch.
Subuiga OCS Sammy Kamau said the driver was alone in the lorry when the accident happened.
"We only got one body from the lorry, which was burnt beyond recognition.
“After contacting the driver's employer, we believe there was only one occupant,” Mr Kamau said.
He said the Meru County fire brigade arrived at the scene but they were unable to contain the fire.
Kenya Red Cross personnel and rangers from the Lewa Downs Conservancy also rushed to the scene but found the driver already burnt to death.
The lorry belonged to Roy Haulers transport company and was heading to Meru.
The body of the driver was taken to the Meru Level Five Hospital mortuary.
