A nine-year-old girl has been admitted to Isiolo County Referral Hospital following a cholera outbreak.

Two cases of cholera has detected at the hospital this week, but a woman was discharged on Wednesday after treatment.

The two, who hail from Attan, contracted the disease after they consumed and used contaminated water from Isiolo River.

Isiolo medical superintendent Stephen Kiluva confirmed the girl who was admitted tested positive for the disease and is in a stable condition.

“The two cases we received on Monday showed symptoms of cholera, which prompted the hospital to send samples to Kenya Medical Research Institute (Kemri), which tested positive for the disease,” said the medic.

CONTAMINATED RIVER

He added that the water flowing downstream from Isiolo River is contaminated and the two, who are not relatives, must have consumed it before treatment.

The girl has, however, been placed in an isolation room at the hospital.

Already communities living along the river have been sensitised on the importance of treating water before consumption and warming their food before eating.

A team of medics have been dispatched to the site to distribute water purification tablets to residents to avoid spread of the disease.

The officer urged locals to be vigilant and report any cases to the hospital.
