Families left homeless as irate residents burn houses over robbery suspicion

Two families in Lailuba, Tigania East, Meru County have been left homeless after irate residents razed their houses after suspecting them to be robbers.

The houses belonging to Mr Joseph Riboti and Mr David Kibuutha were burnt in retaliation to a robbery incident Thursday night.

Five people were left nursing injuries after the mob beat up a suspect and three relatives of another suspect.

Three suspected gangsters broke into a shop at Luuma shopping centre on Thursday night at around 11pm and stole goods valued at Sh10,000 before stabbing the shop owner with a dagger.

In the second incident that occurred about 400 meters away, the robbers are said to have beaten up and raped a woman.

“Three criminals with crude weapons broke into my kiosk where I was sleeping with my two sons.

“They beat me up and left me bleeding. One of them shot in the air when he heard my mother in law asking what was going on,” said Ms Lucy Mwari.

On Friday morning, villagers traced the suspects’ footsteps before apprehending one person.

One of the suspects was beaten up, but rescued by the local chief and police who arrived at the scene as an angry mob threatened to lynch him.

Police officers watched helplessly as the villagers razed the houses of the two suspects.

The parents and a brother of one of the suspects were injured after being attacked by the mob before the local administrator came to their rescue.

According to an eyewitness, the three who had serious cuts were rushed to Isiolo District Hospital.

Meanwhile, officers at Muthara Police Station were interrogating one suspect who was arrested.
