County board boss decries salary disparities

  • Mr Nyatuga said others had bought promotions. “The salary issue must be revisited. A driver we hired earns Sh19,000 a month yet the one we inherited from a local authority gets Sh80,000,” he said.

A majority of county government employees are earning salaries that are not commensurate with their qualifications, an official says.

Of the 2,000 permanent employees, almost 1,600 came from the defunct local authorities.

The chairman of the Migori County Public Service Board, Mr Peterlis Nyatuga, Monday said most of the former council workers did not have “valid academic certificates” or appointment letters.
“Some have fake documents, which they used to get jobs and draw huge salaries,” he said.

Mr Nyatuga said others had bought promotions. “The salary issue must be revisited. A driver we hired earns Sh19,000 a month yet the one we inherited from a local authority gets Sh80,000,” he said.

Speaking at Maranatha Church Guest House during the launch of a capacity assessment and rationalisation scheme by Governor Okoth Obado, Mr Nyatuga said workers from the national government and those hired recently were demoralised due to the huge disparities.

“We must urgently harmonise salaries to boost morale and productivity.”

Mr Obado told the workers not to panic, saying this would enable the county government to place them where they are best suited.
