At least 120 local and international exhibitors have confirmed their participation in this month’s Mombasa International Agricultural Show.

The fair will take place at the Mkomani Show Ground in Mombasa from August 24 to 28 and is expected to attract large number of show-goers.

International exhibitors from China, India, Russia, Pakistan, Tanzania and Uganda are to participate in the fair.

President Uhuru Kenyatta is expected to officially open the show on August 25.

The theme for this year’s fair is: “Enhancing technology in Agriculture and Industry for food security and national growth.”

According to Agricultural Society of Kenya (ASK) Coast branch chairman Brown Ondego, more exhibitors are expected to participate in this year’s show compared to 150 exhibitors last year.

The ASK, he added, had sent invitations to 620 local and international exhibitors, adding that they target to attract between 200 and 300 exhibitors in this year’s show.

On the other hand, Mr Ondego added that students from 1,494 schools from across the Coast region are expected to attend the fair.

The ASK official said preparations for the show were at an advanced stage with exhibitors sprucing up their stands in readiness for the event.

“At the moment, exhibitors are busy renovating their stands while Agriculture firms and groups are preparing their fields for display of crops to show-goers,” he said.

Mr Ondego called on Coast residents to attend the show in large numbers to learn modern farming methods in a bid to address major challenge of food insecurity in the region.

Currently, more than 500,000 people across the Coast have been hit by famine due to crop failure and drought.

He urged farmers to take advantage of the show to embrace new technology to boost food production and milk production for them to earn good incomes.

The ASK official assured that the government would beef up security during the fair for the safety of exhibitors and show-goers.

New exhibitors in the fair include Kenya Electricity Transmission Company, Base Titanium Company, Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), Isinya Feeds and Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (Kemsa).

Others are Kenya Women Finance Trust, Tana River County, Uplands Premium Dairies and Foods, Sanpac Africa, Promasidor, North Coast Medical Training College and TVET Authority.

Meanwhile, 25 entertainment groups have been selected to entertain dignitaries and show-goers during the show.

According to Arena chairman, Henry Nyaga, the 25 groups were picked from 75 groups from Mombasa, Kwale and Kilifi Counties.

The groups include traditional music and dance troupes, choirs, acrobats, drama and children entertainers.
