A 12-year-old pupil was on Saturday being treated at a Mombasa hospital after he was reportedly stabbed by a schoolmate.

The shocking incident happened on Friday evening at Sparki Primary School as the boys were heading home after evening prep.

The boy, a Standard Seven pupil at the school, narrowly missed the knife aimed at his neck, which stuck deep into his wrist as he lifted his arms to shield himself.

He was taken to Mombasa Hospital with the knife still in his left wrist.

Doctors removed the knife on Friday night in a three-hour operation.

The boy's mother said she received a call from the school administration at around 6pm, informing her of the incident.

She said she was informed her son was with a group of friends when he was attacked by the pupil, also in Standard Seven, who came brandishing a knife.

"I was informed the boy stabbed him as he mockingly said: "Hii ni nini? Hii ni kisu? Naweza wadunga nyinyi!" What is this? This is a knife, I can stab you guys!"), she said at the hospital.

The attacker then ran away, leaving his victim with the knife stuck deep in his wrist.

With her was the boy's class teacher, who declined to talk to reporters.

Mombasa Urban OCPD Martin Asin confirmed the incident, saying they had launched investigations.

"This is a matter that we are taking seriously and we must establish the motive of the attack," said Mr Asin.
