Twin boys joined at the abdomen born on Thursday morning at the Coast General Hospital in Mombasa are to be flown to Nairobi for urgent surgery.

The conjoined twins, who doctors said were in need of an urgent delicate surgery to be separated, were born through caesarean section at the hospital.

According to CPGH Chief Administrator Iqbal Khandwalla, both twins weighed 4.6 kg and had to be resuscitated after delivery.

“After the babies were delivered, we had to resuscitate them because of poor breathing,” said Dr Khandwalla at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) where the babies are currently admitted.

He noted that the twins, require a multidisciplinary approach consisting of paediatric surgeons, plastics surgeons among other specialists to investigate keenly which organs are being shared as well as treatment in a well equipped facility.

He added that they had informed the AMREF flying doctors to transport the twins to Kenyatta National Hospital for the delicate procedure.

He said such cases are not very common at the hospital and that their cases range at around one in every a thousand babies born.

Dr Khandwalla said the mother of the twins Eunice Auma, also had low blood pressure when she came to deliver at the facility but is currently stable and recuperating in the ward.

He added that she also used to attend antenatal clinics at an outside facility.
