Four passengers died on the spot after a matatu they were travelling in rammed into the rear of a packed lorry in Jomvu, on the Mombasa-Nairobi highway.

Two others were seriously injured and were taken to hospital in critical condition.

The crash happened early Thursday morning.

A witness and a relative of one of the victims, Bakari Mohammed, who arrived at the scene shortly before 5am said the matatu rammed into the lorry, which was packed on the roadside with part of its rear on the road.

He said the lorry seemed to have developed a mechanical problem.

It had no reflectors, warning signs or leaves to caution other motorists that it had stalled.

The driver of the matatu escaped from the scene after the crash.

The two injured passengers were taken to Coast General Hospital.

The bodies of the dead passengers were taken to the hospital's mortuary.
