Kenya Ferry Services launches clean-up of Likoni crossing

The Kenya Ferry Services (KFS) has started cleaning up and beautifying the Likoni channel.

KFS Managing Director Bakari Gowa said Saturday the aim of the project is to promote a clean and healthy environment at the channel that is used by hundreds of residents to access the ferries every day.

“We are here today to launch a programme that will ensure we have a clean and beautiful environment at the Likoni ferry area and its environs,” Mr Gowa said.

The clean-up is being done in partnership with the Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA), the Comarco Group, Kenya Association of Tour Operators (Kato), Moi University, Base Titanium, Mombasa County government, Kenya School of Government, Matuga, Puma Primary and Secondary schools, among others.

Mr Gowa said the clean-up will be continuous and will also help create awareness of the institution.

“This will not be a one-off exercise but we shall organise more of such events. We will be having this after every six months,” he added.‎

He added that there are plans to put up garbage bins at various point to ensure that members of the public do not throw litter on board the ferries.

“We shall intensify cleaning by sensitising people and also have litter bins at and around the ferry area,” Mr Gowa said.

He urged Mombasa residents to keep their environment clean at all times.
