Kenyans assured of security during Eid-ul-fitr celebrations

Mombasa County Security Committee has identified some 13 mosques that need extra security during Eid-ul-fitr celebrations.

On Tuesday, the committee’s chairman, Mr Nelson Marwa, however asked all Muslim faithful to feel free and secure while holding open air prayers in mosques during the celebrations since the government had deployed more security officers in Mombasa ahead of Eid-ul-fitr.

“We are not honeymooning. Security has been beefed up. We are here to give you maximum security during the prayers. Musa, Sakina, Umul Kulthum, Serani grounds, Loota, Sidik, Kanzul, Mlango wa Papa, Fayaz, TSS, Jundan, Light house and Ridhwan mosque in Majengo are among the mosques where prayers will be held and enough security deployed,” said Mr Marwa.

Addressing a news conference in his office, Mr Marwa said extra security had been deployed at the mosques and public places.

He said the government was monitoring all places of worship, including churches and mosques ahead of the celebrations to mark the end of Ramadhan.

Speaking during a security meeting at his office, the county commissioner said: “Visitors have started flocking into Mombasa, the city is going to be full, the Central Business District is a beehive of activity at night where shopping goes on until very late. “We shall secure all those areas, this is a guarantee the government is giving to the Muslim community and all Kenyans,” he said.

He said the government would act swiftly on intelligence.
