Hundreds of travellers were stranded Monday morning at the Likoni crossing channel following a ferry crisis.

Operations at the busy channel came to a halt after the MV Kwale got stuck on a ramp on the Mombasa Island side.

The ferry had been the only vessel ferrying vehicles across the channel for the past one week.

Currently, only two ferries, the MV Nyayo and the MV Likoni, are in operation.

There were long queues stretching towards Kona ya Polisi on the mainland and about one kilometre on the Mombasa side.

Mombasa County Commissioner Nelson Marwa, who visited the crossing channel, urged employers not to punish workers who reported late as a result of the transport crisis.

Mr Marwa said the Kenya Ferry Services (KFS) management has failed in delivering services and called for the sacking of Managing Director Musa Hassan Musa.

"There are things that are being hidden from us and the MD must go,” he said.

A tourist heading to Mombasa International Airport said he had spent more than three hours in the snarl-up.

"I am from Diani and this is my second time I have been caught up in this crisis.

“I am worried that I might not manage to catch my flight at 10am,” said Mr Stefan Schmitt, a German national.
