Mombasa County women representative Mishi Mboko has been charged with incitement to violence, ethnic hatred and disobedience of the law.

She, however, denied the charges and was released on Sh200,000 bond on Monday.

Last week, Ms Mboko recorded a statement as ordered by the court. She was accompanied by two lawyers and discounted rumours that she had gone into hiding.

“I cannot run from my county, mimi ni mzalendo (I am a patriot) I cannot leave Kenya, I do not see anything wrong that would warrant me to run away from this place. I had my own plans and I had travelled to Malaysia for medical check up and am now here,” she said.

The Director of Public Prosecutions, Keriako Tobiko, had ordered the prosecution of the representative for remarks made on June 1. (READ: Arrest MP for hate speech, says Tobiko)
