Muslim faithful in Mombasa County and its environs started celebrating Idd-ul-Fitr in mosques and open grounds.

At 10:15pm on Sunday, Chief Kadhi Sheikh Shariff Ahmed Muhdhar announced that Muslims could celebrate Idd starting Monday following the sighting of the moon.

He said four faithful informed the Moon Sighting Committee that they had seen the moon in the Likoni and Majengo areas of Mombasa County.

“We grilled and later swore Salim Bakari, Ramadhan Salim and Athman Salim from Likoni and Mahfudh Mbarak of Majengo and we were satisfied with their explanations. I hereby announce Idd celebrations start on Monday,” he said.

The Chief Kadhi sent a message of love, tolerance and unity among the Muslim faithful.

He led thousands of Muslims at the Mombasa County stadium grounds for the Idd-ul-Fitr prayers that marked the end of 29 days of fasting.

“Love, peace, humility and harmony those are the best virtues that we should exercise to fellow humans. I wish all the Muslims and Kenyans at large Idd Mubarak,” the Chief Kadhi said.

At Mbaruk Mosque, Sheikh Mohamed Dor, who led the prayers, asked Muslims to unite and help the less fortunate in the society.
