The Mombasa baby who underwent surgery to correct a rare birth defect has passed away.

Baby Islam Saidi was born with a blocked anal passage and underwent corrective surgery on Monday.

The baby was recuperating at Coast General Hospital’s intensive care unit.

The baby was born with the condition known as “imperforate anus’’ last Thursday but could not be treated because of the doctor’s strike.

However, Mombasa County health bosses intervened and the surgery was done.

Dr Khadija Shikely, the director of health, and hospital administrator Benjamin Mwero were among the doctors who oversaw the operation.
