The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party Mombasa branch has appointed Mtongwe Ward Representative Hamisi Mwidani as the new Majority Leader in the County Assembly, ending a long standing row over the position.

Branch secretary Geoffrey Busaka on Wednesday confirmed that Mr Mwidani would take over from Mr Abdalla Kasagamba.

He said a letter had been sent to Speaker Thadius Rajwayi advising him of the changes and telling him to make an announcement in the county assembly on Thursday.

Party branch chairman Mohamed Hatimy, who was recently kicked out of the finance committee chairman post, had been actively championing for the removal of Mr Kasagamba.

FAILED TO UNITE ASSEMBLY

Mr Hatimy said on Monday that he supported a group that was plotting to oust Mr Kasagamba whom he accused of failing to unite the Assembly.

On Wednesday, Mr Mwidani, a former Mombasa mayor, said he would strive to unite members when he takes over on Thursday.

“The assembly is divided due to wrangles over the majority leader’s position. My first assignment will be to bring members together to work as a team,” said Mr Mwidani who promised to ensure Bills are passed in time.

“As we talk, we are yet to debate the Budget for the financial year 2016/2017 despite the current financial year ending on June 30,” he said.

When Mr Kasagamba was reached for comment on Wednesday, he told the Nation he was still in office and would know his fate on Thursday.

He said he was waiting for communication from the Speaker about the party’s decision. The Speaker could not be reached for comment on Wednesday.
