Hundreds of ferry users were Tuesday morning stranded for hours after services were disrupted at the Likoni Channel.

This is after two ferries, Mv Nyayo and Mv Harambee, were withdrawn as they could not operate because of heavy currents caused by an overflow of water at the Channel from nearby rivers.

Only two ferries, Mv Kwale and Mv Kilindini, were in service leading to a crisis.

Kenya Ferry Services officials suspended services at the Mtongwe Channel and brought in Mv Likoni which operates at the Channel (Mtongwe) to help ease the crisis at Likoni.

“Heavy rains have caused high and heavy currents making it difficult for the ferry to cross from either Channels,” said KFS managing director Bakari Gowa.

He said due to strong and high tides movement of ferries at the Channel is slow.
