A 15-year-old pupil gave birth outside a private hospital in Mombasa on Wednesday after being turned away from public hospitals due to the ongoing doctors' strike.

Her mother said she first took the girl to Port Reitz sub-county hospital but the nurses could not handle her situation because her pregnancy was premature.

“They referred me to a private hospital in Changamwe, but I was asked to pay Sh6,000 deposit before my daughter could be assisted. I left because I could not afford,” said the mother.

The mother, a Miritini resident, said she went to Coast General Provincial Hospital but was turned away because there were no doctors.

“I used a boda boda to transport my daughter from five hospitals within the county but I never got help. I was told by a guard at the Coast Hospital to seek medical services at Al Farooq Hospital - a private facility,” she added.

When they got to Al Farooq Hospital her daughter delivered. She was helped by the doctors and the baby was kept in an incubator.

The hospital’s chief executive officer Adan Mahmud said the baby was delivered at eight months.

During the ongoing doctors' strike, Mr Mahmud says the hospital has provided emergency services to nearly 25 expectant mothers without charging them.
