Leaders from Mombasa County have been warned against disrespecting the President Uhuru Kenyatta as his visit to the region draws near.

County Commissioner Maalim Mohamed said it was wrong for some leaders in Mombasa to belittle the Head of State, adding that he must be accorded respect as he is the President of the country.

“The President doesn’t require a permit from the county government chiefs to visit Mombasa.

“The Head of State has the right to come to Mombasa any time he wants as it is part of the country,” added Mr Mohamed.

Without mentioning names, the county commissioner said some leaders had spoken badly about President Kenyatta following his expected tour of the region.

The county commissioner noted that although a few leaders are unhappy with the President’s visit, there are many other leaders and residents who are waiting to see him.

“There are delegations of leaders from across the Coast region who are waiting to meet the President when he visits. He is after the good of the local people,” said Mr Mohamed.

He said the Jubilee administration had initiated a lot of development projects for the benefit of the residents and investors and therefore the President deserved respect.

Some of the projects by the government, he said, include the multi-billion shilling Moi International Airport road project which, when complete, will reduce congestion on the key route.

Mr Mohamed further said that the government had upgraded the Kongowea Market at a cost of Sh320 million, lit the streets and renovated Mackinon Market.

At the same time, the commissioner asked county government to address the garbage crisis in the town as well as the smoke originating from the Kibarani dumping site.
